HISTORY

BDACA.ORG In 2004, an extensive survey was undertaken by Dr. Irene A. Gutheil and Dr. Roslyn H. Chernesky of Fordham University (www.fordham.edu), New York, USA, funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies Limited (www.atlanticphilanthropies.org). The resulting report, “Ageing in Bermuda: Meeting the Needs of Seniors” provides a comprehensive view of the ageing landscape in Bermuda. Based on the findings of this report, and others, the Bermuda Council on Ageing was formed on 24 July 2006 in response to a rapidly growing awareness that Bermuda, like many other countries, has an ageing population and needs to prepare for a major, demographic shift.

BDACA.ORGThe Bermuda Council on Ageing provides a forum for Government, the Private Sector, the non-Profit Third Sector, and members of the community-at-large, to come together to identify and help develop solutions to the challenges of an ageing population.

SOCIAL CHANGE STRATEGIES

1) Convene:
Convene the four stakeholder groups (Government, the Private Sector, the non-Profit Third Sector, and the community at large) in a variety of structured, facilitated, goal-oriented discussions to develop comprehensive, collaborative, and innovative solutions that result in the introduction of effective policies and programmes for an ageing population.

2) Research:
Identify and research critical issues relative to ageing populations; collaborate with other organizations to coordinate research initiatives, review various research methodologies, encourage best practice, and analyse data; and develop reports for distribution to the greater community.

3) Awareness:
Build awareness of critical issues and the impact of Bermuda’s ageing population among all four stakeholder groups to ensure strategic prioritization and better utilization of resources.

VISION STATEMENT
